The fox is a fascinating animal, widespread in the northern hemisphere and widely regarded as cunning, sly and elusive. Its red fur has made it a symbol of desire and sexuality in many cultures, where the fox was often seen as a creature of evil that was burnt alive. However, in Japan the Kitsune is still revered as a sacred spirit. An Incas legend explains how in some foxes, the tip of the tail turned black. During a flood caused by the disgruntled gods, the animals had to take refuge on top of a mountain, but the foxes were almost reached by the water and wet the tip of their tail, turning it black. The Celts believed that this animal had the gift of prophecy and therefore guided themselves in the woods thanks to it. In Egypt it was already a symbol identifying divinity and the favour of the gods, especially with Ninhursag, one of the main goddesses of Mesopotamia.
In ancient Finnish mythology, the fox was considered magical because of its ability to create the northern lights by waving its tail.
