The tanuki is a raccoon dog. Over the centuries it has been portrayed now as a cunning and evil creature, now as a naive and clumsy animal, but always endowed with supernatural powers and an irresistible desire to play teasing humans. Although in legends and popular stories the tanuki is often represented as a sinister creature, in art it has always preferred to immortalize the more comic side of this creature.
